Challenge #4: Appreciation for Creation

This challenge asks students to explore the animal kingdom and create a "Top Ten" list of their favorite animals. At least one animal on their list must be an endangered species. Students must create a profile of their endangered animal that includes the following:
-One video or large image of the animal either in the wild or in captivity.
-Five fun facts-habitat, appetite, abilities, etc.
-Two to three facts about what threatens the animal's extinction and an explanation of what is being done to stop the downward trajectory of their numbers.
-Each person needs to make one profile for their endangered animal.
The TOP 5 Lists and Profiles!!!

Top 5 animals:
Axolotl
Blue Glaucus (endangered)
Poisonous Dart Frog (Yellow,Red,Blue)
Dumbo Octopus
Black Mamba
Facts:
Blue Glaucus: I admire its coloration and overall area. Like it looks like phoenix, hermaphrodites, meaning there bisexual. They can generate poison by eating others .They chill floating upside down trying to catch prey. Can kill prey almost 3x times bigger. It can steal venom.
It is getting endangered by: ocean acidification and diet.

The Facts and Appreciation of the Tiger
Fun Facts:
- Tigers are most of the time unaccompanied and solitary, unless they are with offspring or mother.
- Because of the amount of meat they eat, tigers are able to keep the healthy ecosystem balanced.
- Tigers can get as heavy as from 220 to 660 pounds.
- Their natural habitat is in the rainforest, grasslands, mangrove swamps or on the savannas in Africa.
- The population of tigers is 3,890.
Endangered Facts:
Tigers today are on the verge of extinction because of
- Habitats being destroyed for human activities and overpopulation.
- Habitats being flooded and climate change.
- Poaching of tigers for their fur and bones.
What is Being Done: The World Wildlife organization is helping with the countries that have tigers by having them come up with cameras or DNA tests in order to stop expanding human activities and poaching. Another thing they are working on is stopping the trade of tiger pelts and making poaching illegal. And finally, they are persuading governments to maintain tigers and taking care of them.

- They can eat a bamboo shoot of 1 ½ inch with one bite.
- Bamboo takes up 99% of a panda’s diet, but they will occasionally eat fish and small animals
- Endangered Facts
- The reason they are endangered was that of habit destruction.
- A panda has to eat 15% of its body weight, so it needs whatever they can get their paws on, and if their habit is being destroyed, then they won’t be able to eat.
- What is being done to stop it?
- People are trying to protect the forests to maintain their habitat and food sources.
- Video
- Basking Shark: They are mystical and scary which is one of the reasons that I like them. - Wolverine: These animals are interesting because they seem like cute creatures but they can really do damage. They are incredible to think about because they can represent how you don’t judge a book by its cover.
- Malayan Tiger:
Fun Facts: One of the smallest species of tigers along with the Sumatran tigers they grow to around 2 meters in length. The scientific name of these tigers is the Panthera tigris jacksoni. Malayan tiger has a rough tongue, powerful jaws, large canine teeth, large front paws equipped with sharp, retractable claws, muscular body and a long tail. The Malayan tigers wait for the right moment by stalking its prey and attacking by strangling its prey. Not a lot of the Malayan tiger's cubs survive they have a 50% of cubs manage to survive after the age of 2.
Endangered Facts: The main reason why the Malayan Tigers are endangered because there is human development in the Malayan tiger's habitat. Also, decades of poaching caused the rapid decline in the Malayan Tigers.
Solution: There are many ways to solving this problem such as helping prevent wildlife trade, releasing them back into the wild from captivity, reducing pressure on natural resources and many more. Help these innocent species by spreading the word.

Extinction Facts: The Bluefin Tuna is very popular among the sushi world. As the population decreases the demand for it increases which makes the price for it increase and as a result it is hunted a lot. There was also an oil spill in the gulf of mexico which killed a bunch of them
What is being done: The ICCAT regulates the selling and hunting of the tunas and that also counts for the Bluefin tuna. There was also an agreement between a bunch of countries limiting the trade of Bluefin Tuna
Sea otter
1. Sea otters sleep on their backs while floating in the water. To prevent drifting away, they often wrap themselves in kelp or hold hands while resting.
2. Sea otters are very social animals that can live in groups made up of hundreds of individuals. Rather fittingly, these groups of sea otters are called rafts.
3. They are one of the few animals that use tools! Sea otters use rocks to crack open shellfish and clams to eat. When they find a really good rock, they will keep it around by storing it in little bags under their arm.
4. This may seem a little gross, but not when you learn they are meticulously clean. One reason for this is their lack of a blubber layer. Without this, they rely on their two fur layers to keep them warm.
5. Although they are capable of surviving on land, sea otters often spend their whole lives in the water. Which is quite impressive considering they can live up to 23 years!
Threats
Oil spills from offshore drilling or shipping are an immense threat to sea otter populations.
When sea otters come into contact with oil, it causes their fur to mat, which prevents it from insulating their bodies. Without this natural protection from the frigid water, sea otters can quickly die from hypothermia.
How we can help
People are cleaning the water when oil spills occur and are taking care of the otters.
